The Second East Asia Workshop on Tree-Ring Analysis
제2회 동아시아 연륜해석 국제워크숍
Chungbuk National University and Chonnam National University, South Korea
1998. 25-30. October

PREFACE

Internation Workshop on Asian and Pacific Dendrochrnology had been held in Tsukuba, Japan in March, 1995 with successful organization of Dr. Sadaaki Ohta. In this meeting, a dendrochronological field camp or training school was recommended to stimulate tree-ring studies in the region. As a follow-up meeting of IWAPD, the first East Asia Workshop on Tree-Ring Analysis was held in Cheongju, Korea on November 6-7, 1997. Eighteen papers were presented in the first day; four from abroad, Russia(E. Vaganov), China (Y. Liu), Japan (T. Katoh) and Thailand (N. Pumijumnong) and the other from Korea. In the tutorial workshop of the second day, two lectures and three practical labs were given. About 30 Korean scientists and students from various discipline attended this tutorial workshop. It was pity not to be able to have more fellows from abroad.

After the first meeting, we planned expand this meeting in the region of East Asia by combining it with another international meeting, the 4th Pacific Regional Wood Anotomy conference, which is going to be held in Kwngju during October 26-29, 1998. Professor Yoon Soo Kim, the chief organizer of the  4th PRWAC agreed to help us in the circulation and registration, and providing facilities. A tutorial workshop on tree-ring analysis (Oct. 25, Kwangju) was first planned and one-day conference (Oct. 30, Cheongju) was added at the last stage.

It is our hope to have the scientists and students in the East Asia region from various fields at this meeting to study the basic prinsiples and methods of dendrochronology and to exchange different methods of crossdating and chronology building, and new applications of tree-ring analysis. We believe that this kind of activity can enhance interdisciplinary approaches and regional-scale studies for dendrochronology.
